What is Ontario Works?
The Ontario Works Act, 1997 provides the framework for social assistance in Ontario. The vision of the Ontario Works Act is that of a program that treats people with fairness and dignity, enhances their self-esteem and encourages independence, self-reliance and community contribution and participation. Ontario Works provides employment assistance to people in financial need to increase their employability, assist them to obtain sustainable employment and at the same time provides temporary financial assistance.
People who are eligible for financial assistance under the Ontario Works Act have a responsibility to participate in employment assistance activities as a condition of eligibility for financial assistance and Ontario Works delivery agents have a responsibility to offer employment assistance activities to participants to enable them to become self-reliant.
