Changes to Social Assistance

We are making improvements to Social Assistance that may benefit you.

What does this mean for you?

  • All Ontario Works recipients are getting a 1% increase in their benefits. For more information, click here.
  • If you are a single person with no children receiving Ontario Works, you will also receive a top-up to your basic needs or board and lodge amount.  In total, this means an additional $20 per month.
  • If you work, you can earn up to $200 each month without it affecting your assistance.  Every dollar over $200 you earn will continue to reduce your income support by 50 cents. For more information, click here.
  • If you are self-employed, you are also eligible for the same earning exemptions. For more information, click here.
  • If you are a full-time high school student and you notify your caseworker, any money you earn from a job or training program will not affect your assistance. For more information, click here.
  • You can now have a greater amount of assets, such as bank savings or a car. For more information, click here.
  • Any gifts or voluntary payments you receive, up to $6,000 a year, will not affect your assistance. For more information, click here.

These changes are effective September 1, 2013.

Note: The rate increase and changes to earnings exemptions will be reflected on your October 2013 payment.
