Parry Sound District Housing Corporation

The District of Parry Sound Social Services Administration Board (DSSAB) is the Service Manager for social housing in the District of Parry Sound.  Final responsibility for administering social housing was transferred to the DSSAB effective March 1, 2002. 

Social housing units are owned and operated by local housing, non-profit or co-operative housing corporations.   In the District, there is one local housing corporation owned by the DSSAB (Parry Sound District Housing Corporation) and five non-profits (Parry Sound Municipal Non-Profit, Golden Sunshine Municipal Non-Profit in Powassan, Affordable Housing Now [private non-profit in Parry Sound], and two federal projects - Fell Homes in Burk’s Falls, and Georgian Bay Native Non-profit Housing in Parry Sound.  The province regulates social housing through the Social Housing Reform Act (SHRA) as well as the Tenant Protection Act

As the Local Housing Corporation, we own 209 units in the District.  All of these units are 100% rent-geared-to-income, and are a mix of types (54 family units, 105 single units, and 50 senior units).  

In addition to the LHC stock, there are 164 units of non-profit housing stock in the District.   Of the total, 56 are market units and 108 units are RGI with a breakdown of type as follows:  72 family units, 89 senior units, and 3 individual units. 

As the Service Manager we are responsible for:

  • monitoring service agreements with the five non-profit housing providers
  • ensuring non-profit housing providers adhere to required legislation, DSSAB policies and procedures, service agreements and federal agreements
  • assuming ownership of the Local Housing Corporation (LHC)
  • providing operating subsidies for the non-profit providers and the LHC
  • funding rent-geared-to-income (RGI) subsidies for the non-profit providers and LHC
  • receiving and determining eligibility of housing applications for rent-geared-to-income housing
  • receiving and determining eligibility of Special Priority applications from victims of domestic abuse
  • maintaining the centralized tenant waitlist
  • tenant placement
  • community relations and advocacy
  • administering the Rent Supplement Program
  • administering the Consolidated Homelessness Program
  • administering the Emergency Shelter and Energy Supplement Fund (ESES)
  • Administering the Provincial Affordable Housing Program
